What is Sketching with Street Dancers?

Sketching with Street Dancers is an interdisciplinary workshop & live drawing session that combines movement, music and mark making. Sketching with Street Dancers features Street/Club Dancers as drawing models and teaches participants how to use mark making techniques from graffiti writing and/or observational drawing to track, trace and transmit the dancers’ movement. The Sketching with Street Dancers crew also includes a DJ who will deliver the soundtrack; a visual artist who will emcee the session as the drawing instructor, and a  timekeeper.

Sketching with Street Dancers Vol 10 (Litefeet Edition) is a guided, not so still life, drawing session that connects movement, mark making (drawing) and music. The session features drawing demonstrations and exercises designed to prepare participants to track, trace and transmit the shapes, lines, forms, textures and gestures performed by Jayy Wavy and Red Ink, the featured movement models. The drawing session will be followed by a gallery walk for participants and dancers to see the results of their collaboration in real time. Sketching with Street Dancers was created by Lafotographeuse & is produced by Kut The Rug Institute. Drawing paper, surfaces and pencils will be provided for participants. Volume 10 will be presented during the 8th Annual Can’t Stop Hip- Hop Conference organized & sponsored by HipHopEX.

ABOUT SKETCHING WITH STREET DANCERS Volume 9 (Earth Week Edition) is a “not so still life”, drawing session that combines movement, mark making (drawing) and music.

Four drawing models will embody natural elements (earth, fire, water and wind) that reveal climate change to everyday people. Sketching Vol 9 begins with three warm up exercises and mark making demonstrations. The event continues with guided drawing exercises designed for the audience to track, trace and transmit the shapes, lines, forms, space, textures and gestures created by Street Dancers, Chi-Chi, Rarebreed, Erthquake and Nebz serving as drawing models in motion. The drawing session will be followed by a gallery walk for sketchers and dancers to see the results of their collaboration in real time. DJ Rocka will deliver the soundtrack. Noelle Salaun will demonstrate drawing techniques to convey the dancers’ movement on paper. Aurora Hidalgo will be guiding volume 9 as the timekeeper. Sketching with Street Dancers was created by Lafotographeuse & is organized by Kut The Rug Institute. Volume 9 was commissioned by NY Hall of Science. ****This event is free and open to the public. Drawing paper, pencils & surfaces will be provided for all participants.****

Join us for Sketching with Street Dancers Volume 8, a not-so-still life drawing session featuring professional street dancers CRT, director of Dancers Unlimited and Jungle, founder of DICE Battle & Just Visiting Dance Collective as our “movement models”, with hands-on instruction by artist Noelle Salaun.

After a successful series of Sketching with Street Dancers sessions at The Met Museum, the Guggenheim, Queens Council on the Arts, and Governor’s Island, founder of Kut the Rug Inc and Brooklyn based artist Lafotographeuse (aka: Amanda Adams-Louis) joins Brooklyn’s newest community-oriented cultural center mi Centro BK to host a meditative, music filled celebration of the human body in MOTION. Just bring a pen and paper and learn how to draw a subject in ways you’ve never imagined! 

Sketching with Street Dancers Volume 7 x Works & Process

Sketching with Street Dancers, Volume 7 (Animation), is an observational drawing session that connects movement, mark-making, and music.

The event is structured around timed drawing exercises designed for the audience (sketchers) to track, trace, and transmit the movements of two dancing models onto paper. This drawing session will be followed by a brief walk through the rotunda enabling sketchers and movement models to see the results of their collaboration and connect in real time.

Instructor, James “Cricket” Colter will demonstrate for the sketchers drawing techniques to convey the lines, shapes, patterns, accents, articulations, and gestures performed by the dancers. Noelle Salaun will serve as the timekeeper and music selector. As movement models, the featured dance artists, Kinen (Lite Feet) and Mugen (Flexn), will highlight movements that fall within the animation family through their respective street dance forms.

Sketching materials will be provided, but artists are also welcome to bring their own pencils and drawing paper. While pencils, sketchbooks, and notebooks are permitted, pens, paints, and easels are not.

Works & Process is an independent performing arts organization that champions performing artists and their creative process from studio to stage. They provide commissioning support for many multidisciplinary projects, and rare, longitudinal, and fully funded creative residencies. Sketching with Street Dancers Volume 6 x MetFest 2023 is an observational drawing program that connects movement, mark making (drawing) and music.

Volume 6 consists of three guided drawing exercises designed for the audience to track, trace and transmit the shapes, lines, forms, space, textures and gestures created by the featured drawing models in motion. This event includes two sketching sessions.

Desire X, Jungle, Jai’Quin & Static are the featured drawing models for Volume 6. DJ Hard Hittin’ Harry will deliver the soundtrack. Noelle Salaun will demonstrate drawing techniques to convey the dancers’ movement on paper. Aurora Hidalgo will be guiding volume 6 as the timekeeper. Each drawing session will be followed by a gallery walk for sketchers and dancers to see the results of their collaboration in real time.

Met Fest 2023 SCHEDULE →


Sketching with Street Dancers will be held in Gallery 548, the Petrie European Sculpture Court.

The Met will provide paper, clipboards and pencils for all attendees to use to draw the dancers. The Met Sketching Policy

• Sketching, in pencil only, is permitted in all the collection galleries of The Met. Sketching is also permitted in most exhibitions; please inquire at the Information Desk in the Great Hall about current exhibitions and guidelines.

• The use of ballpoint pens, ink, markers, fountain pens, or watercolors is not permitted at any time. Crayon, pastel, and charcoal are permitted only on Museum-supervised tours that specifically authorize their use.

• While sketching, please do not hinder visitor traffic flow in the galleries.

• During periods of high attendance, the Museum reserves the right to make any necessary adjustments to this sketching policy..
